Ever since picking up the sport in primary 4, fencing has become a significant part of my life. Initially, it was just a fun activity I went for once a week. As I trained, my interest in the sport grew immensely; I was intrinsically driven to improve, to be better, and so I began training more often. Fencing is something different, its exhilarating, and challenging; requiring not only physical strength, but mental and emotional strength as well.
Fencing has opened up many doors for me; opportunities I would never have had, if I had not picked up the sport. My parents, coaches and the friends I’ve made are paramount in my journey thus far. They have pushed, guided, motivated, and supported me all the way, not once have they given up on me, and for this I am thankful.
I’ll admit, it hasn’t been easy. There are good and bad days, and competitions don’t always go the way you’d want them to, but you’ve just got to keep your head up and work on improving even more. Joining fencing is a choice I’m glad I made and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
